Description An account of the resource Southern Cross of Honor Medal. This medal was created by the United Daughters of the Confederacy to be given postwar to Confederate veterans who showed valor in battle. The medals were created in 1898 and distributed beginning in 1900. The back of the medal features a motto of the Confederacy, "Deo Vindice", Latin for "With God as our Vindicator". In addition it features the dates 1861 and 1865, as well as the phrase, "From the UDC to the UCV" (United Daughters of the Confederacy to the United Confederate Veterans). This medal differs from the medal approved by the Congress of the Confederate States to be distributed by the President to deserving veterans. None of these approved medals were ever awarded. Description An account of the resource This piece of wood features a .58 caliber minie ball deeply embedded in a piece of wood. Invented by the French army officer Claude-Etienne Minié in 1849, minie balls revolutionized battle. They were smaller than the diameter of the rifle and thus, easy to load. They were also extremely deadly due to their size and expansion upon being fired. This type of ammunition was often used with the Springfield Model 1861 rifled musket. War (Civil War). Description An account of the resource Scalpel. This metal scalpel has a wooden handle engraved with "The PS CO". The metal blade is engraved with E R J. Rodgers & Sons, 6 Norfolk St., Sheffield, England. Scalpels were used in the course of surgeries during the war. Those suffering from battle wounds sometimes survived after undergoing surgeries or amputations. Though modern procedures such as blood transfusions and antibiotics were not yet available, some painkillers and anesthetics were used. Organized hospitals were created, though due to the number of injured men, many soldiers were still treated in private residences. The importance of sanitation as a preventative measure against infection was introduced during this time. Description An account of the resource Brass Three-Size Fleam for Bloodletting. This tool, called a fleam, is used to facilitate bloodletting. The smallest size is engraved with the brand, "Corwick". Bloodletting was a practice implemented during the Civil War to attempt to heal soldiers from a variety of ailments, including pneumonia and infection. Bleeding was also used to drain "bad blood" and treat fevers. Canister shot consisted of a metal can filled with as many as 48 iron balls. When shot from a cannon, these iron balls exit the barrel and explode, killing and wounding soldiers from a wide range.
