War (Civil War). Description An account of the resource Two Union Veteran Medals in case. These star-shaped medals are inscribed with "Grand Army of the Republic, 1861-Veteran-1866". The medal hangs from a ribbon showing the Union flag and a blue bar, one of which features an eagle. The engraving on this medal consists of Union imagery and many symbols. The front shows the goddess of liberty flanked by a soldier and a sailor clasping hands, representing loyalty. In the middle two children receive charitable reassurance from the soldiers. On the sides are a National Flag and an Eagle and a bundle of rods (fasco) representing the power of the Union. Each point on the star is engraved with a symbol of the branches of the military: A bugle for the infantry, cannons for the artillery men, a musket for the Marines, sabers for the cavalry, and an anchor for the Navy. The back side of the medal is decorated with more symbols of the Union victory, including a laurel branch, the National Shield, and twenty-four Corps Badges. Description An account of the resource 1860s-era Double Barrel Percussion Pistol. This pistol is metal with a wooden handle and does not feature a brand name. It has 3 inch barrels. Such handguns were popular at the time because they featured rotating cylinders, allowing the soldier to shoot several times, sometimes as many as six times, before reloading. While these pistols allowed for multiple shots, they were difficult to load, requiring the soldier to put gunpowder into the chamber, ram the ball on top, use oil to seal the front of the cylinder, and then cap the end of each chamber prior to firing the weapon. Though these weapons were more efficient, they could only be used effectively at a short range. Description An account of the resource Southern Cross of Honor Medal. This medal was created by the United Daughters of the Confederacy to be given postwar to Confederate veterans who showed valor in battle. The medals were created in 1898 and distributed beginning in 1900. The back of the medal features a motto of the Confederacy, "Deo Vindice", Latin for "With God as our Vindicator". In addition it features the dates 1861 and 1865, as well as the phrase, "From the UDC to the UCV" (United Daughters of the Confederacy to the United Confederate Veterans). This medal differs from the medal approved by the Congress of the Confederate States to be distributed by the President to deserving veterans. None of these approved medals were ever awarded. Description An account of the resource This piece of wood features a .58 caliber minie ball deeply embedded in a piece of wood. Invented by the French army officer Claude-Etienne Minié in 1849, minie balls revolutionized battle. They were smaller than the diameter of the rifle and thus, easy to load. They were also extremely deadly due to their size and expansion upon being fired. This type of ammunition was often used with the Springfield Model 1861 rifled musket.
